23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
The only way we can ever truly grow in the Lord is to give him access to all the hidden places of the heart. We are like onions that need peeled back little by little. This is the Spirit’s work and He uses the Word of God as His tool. But we must earnestly ask and seek for God to search our hearts to identify for us areas that need changed. I have found that things in our life that we most often have to justify to others are areas that have been closed off from the Lord’s inspection. The reason is that we have built up such a defense towards the subject that it causes our spiritual hearing to be dulled. This is how someone can ultimately spot a splinter in someone else’s eye but not realize that there is a plank in there’s.
We must also understand that this is not a game of comparison. In other words, so and so does it so it must be OK for me to do the same. The Holy Spirit must be our inspector, not the standard of others. If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son will cleanse us from all sin (I John 1:7). It is imperative that we walk in all the light that we have. God is looking for obedience… even if the activity that He is revealing is not necessarily sin. It becomes sin when we don’t lay it down at His command.
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
What weight or sin is keeping you from realizing your full potential in God? Ask the Holy Spirit to work in you and examine your heart. A good place to begin is the thing in your life that must be defended and justified. Maybe it will pass the inspection… if so, then you no longer need to defend yourself; you can instead let God be your defender. If God be for you who then can be against you? (Romans 8:31.)
